The acclaimed naturalist Alexander Skutch loved the Laughing Falcon, or Guaco, as it is affectionately called in Central America. And that is to say something: Skutch wasn’t particularly fond of raptors. But the Guaco’s diet of snakes earned him a special place in Skutch’s heart. The scientific name of the Laughing Falcon characterizes the bird well: Herpotheres literally means “mowing down snakes”, while the epitet Cachinnans means “laughing immoderately”. What a fun bird!
